In DC Comics’ new Aquaman series, Jackson Hyde is working to become the next hero of Atlantis…but his villains are downright embarrassing. While Arthur Curry’s Aquaman may have him training in simulations where he’s on Apokolips fighting the parademon servants of Darkseid, things are a little different in the real world. Rather than facing down threats like the Ocean Master, Joker, or Lex Luthor, Jackson’s foes are super lame (and his friends on the Titans make sure he knows it in this first issue).

Recently in the DC Universe, Atlantis has shifted away from a monarchy and has been transitioning into a democracy. As a result, Arthur Curry and his wife Mera no longer sit on thrones, giving them more time to spend with each other and their new child Andy, the future Aquawoman who will eventually be trained by Jackson Hyde’s Aquaman (as revealed by DC’s Future State event). However, for that to happen the current Aqualad needs to become Aquaman first, and this new series from Brandon Thomas and Diego Olortegui is going to show just that, showcasing Jackson’s evolution from sidekick to full-fledged superhero.
