Pokémon Legends: Arceus will allow players to explore the wild and untamed Hisui region, but can trainers have Link Battles with other human players?
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is going in a new direction for the series, but does this mean that players will still be able to engage each other in Pokémon Link Battles? The multiplayer connectivity of the Game Boy was one of the main reasons why Pokémon appeared on the handheld system, even though it meant dealing with strict memory limitations. Since then, Link Battles have become a long-running feature in most games.
The ability to battle and trade with other players was a major part of the appeal of Pokémon Red and Blue, as it encouraged social interaction in a way that other video games had been unable to do. The battle aspect of the games led to an entire competitive format for Pokémon battles, where players min/maxed the stats of their teams, and worked out every loophole and overpowered strategy, in order to defeat their foes. The addition of online play in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl opened this up even further, allowing players from all across the globe to face each other in Pokémon battles.
