Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has ruled out any potential Fortnite NFTs, believing the field is “tangled up with an intractable mix of scams.”

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney recently stated the company will not be pursuing NFTs for games like Fortnite any time soon, saying the field is “tangled up with scams.” Other game companies have been actively pursuing NFTs in a variety of ways, leading to backlash from fans due to environmental concerns. As of right now, the blockchain-supported tokens are experiencing a surge in popularity, resulting in celebrities and companies jumping on the trend.

NFTs, non-fungible tokens, are a way of owning digital media, such as GIFs and images. It’s similar to owning an original art piece, in that each NFT holds value because it’s deemed to be unique – i.e., “non-fungible.” That said, NFTs’ cryptocurrency-like, mining-based value assignment uses up a lot of energy, meaning they will likely take a toll on the planet. Earlier this year, Sega announced plans to support NFTs, and fans responded angrily. Many pointed out the irony of the decision, as one of Sega’s biggest franchises, Sonic the Hedgehog, heavily features themes of environmentalism.
