Though Marvel’s What If…? episode 7 focused on Party Thor, it may have subtly included Hela’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. What If…? introduced a timeline where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is an only child, revealing he’d become quickly bored without Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in his life. Seeking excitement wherever he can get it, Thor heads to Earth when his mother, Frigga (voiced by Josette Eales), goes on a trip. There, the God of Thunder throws an epic party, resulting in several MCU characters making appearances. Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Howard the Duck (Seth Green), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Korg (Taika Waititi) are all among the party guests. However, the blowout bash could have world-ending consequences, so Captain Marvel (voiced by Alexandra Daniels) steps in to stop it.
Though What If…? claims that Thor is an only child, the episode seems to forget he also has a sister. Cate Blanchett’s Hela, a.k.a. the Goddess of Death, debuts in Thor: Ragnarok. Hela was Odin’s (Anthony Hopkins) firstborn child and served as his executioner until her ambitions and bloodlust became too much for even him. To stop Hela, Odin imprisoned her in Hel; however, the character escaped following her father’s death in Ragnarok. Thor eventually defeated Hela, but the battle led to the destruction of Asgard.
