Director Mike Flanagan, with some help from his producing partner and two of Midnight Mass‘s stars, breaks down a crucial alcoholics anonymous scene from the second episode of Netflix’s chilling new series. Midnight Mass is the latest horror offering from The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan, who is also known for his work on The Haunting of Bly Manor and Doctor Sleep. The series tells the story of a dwindling island community and the mysterious arrival of a priest, who brings with him miracles, mysteries, and a host of unanswered questions.

At the core of the series is Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford), a man haunted by a young woman’s death he was directly responsible for while driving drunk. Much of the series focuses on the guilt Flynn feels and his attempts to make peace with his past actions. The second episode, titled “Book II: Psalms,” features a standout sequence that takes place during an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting between Flynn and the mysterious Father Paul (Hamish Linklater), which quickly devolves into a debate about religion versus science.
