Here’s how much weight Christian Bale shed for his role in The Machinist. Bale’s first breakthrough role came when he was cast in Steven Spielberg’s Empire Of The Sun in 1987. In the years that followed he appeared in several more notable roles in Little Women and Velvet Goldmine, but it was his American Psycho performance that really saw him break out in Hollywood. The role caught the attention of the audiences as well. When DiCaprio did drop out, producers considered other names like Ewan McGregor – who Bale personally called up to convince him to turn the role down. His persistence paid off, with American Psycho often being cited as some of his best work. He was later offered a cameo appearance as Bateman in 2003’s The Rules Of Attraction, but declined as he was loyal to director Mary Harron’s version of the character. In the years that followed, the actor signed on to a bunch of projects that didn’t meet much critical or commercial success, including Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and future cult favorite Reign Of Fire.
