Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ villain setup with Jonah was unfortunately undone by Godzilla vs. Kong, but the next movie can revive it properly.
2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong dropped the setup that Godzilla: King of the Monsters delivered with Jonah (Charles Dance), but here’s how Godzilla 3 can revive it. In King of the Monsters’ post-credits scene, it was revealed that not only did the eco-terrorist survive the chaos caused by the Titans, but he was still a threat. Jonah grinning wickedly while purchasing the sole-remaining head of Ghidorah indicated that he’d return at some point in the future.
Jonah ultimately didn’t come back for Godzilla vs. Kong, but the Ghidorah head he recovered did play a central role in the movie’s biggest twist. Apparently, Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir) and APEX got their hands on the head offscreen and used it to control their robotic creation, Mechagodzilla. Where Jonah fit into all this and why he didn’t have Ghidorah’s head anymore wasn’t addressed at all. Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard jokingly said that Jonah was stepped on by Godzilla during the five-year time skip, whereas the novelization offered a very different explanation, which is that Jonah sold Ghidorah’s skull to Simmons.
